CANBIKE INSTRUCTORS COURSE

The CAN-BIKE Instructor course will prepare CAN-BIKE 2 graduates with the skills, knowledge and attitudes needed to effectively instruct all levels of CAN-BIKE courses.

Saturday 
* Leading CAN-BIKE Courses

Lunch
* Lunch discussion of selected topics from the following list:
CB2 Theory--
* State the four core concepts of CAN-BIKE
* Know the five basic traffic principles
* Crashes and Collisions--
* Describe the four basic kinds of crashes
* Explain the three key CAN-BIKE strategies for dealing with collisions
* Describe how traffic patterns differ in urban and rural areas
Cycling in Traffic--
* Explain the four basic criteria for deciding where to ride in a lane
* Recognise three benefits of taking the lane
* Know the three hazardous situations the cyclist avoids by performing VSLHT
* Identify three hazardous situations avoided by staying away from parked cars
Safety, mechanical and braking --
* Perform a helmet fit

* Perform a bike fit with emphasis on knee placement
* Perform a mechanical inspection
* Explain typical bicycle problems and how to fix them
* Demonstrate 'Threshold Braking' (use Internet search engines)

Sunday
Practice teaching indoors: Five traffic principles, intersection positioning, and helmet fit.
Practice teaching outdoors: straight-line riding, panic stops, rock dodge to E-Turn (weather permitting)

* Forty-nine question short answer test

 

NOTES

 

 

1. Candidates for this course must apprentice with an instructor before taking the instructor course - minimum two courses recommended.
2
. Graduates of this course must serve a minimum 20 hour practicum before receiving CBI certification. Assisting two courses is usually sufficient.
3. To lead a certified CAN-BIKE 2 course in B.C., instructors must be a fully insured member of Cycling BC or the Canadian Cycling Association, and have a valid First Aid Certificate.
4. Upon registration you will receive a list of readings and assignments which must be completed before the first session.

PREREQUISITES

You must be a graduate of CAN-BIKE 2 having achieved:- no less than 80% on the written exam.- no less than 90% on skills and handling test. If you did not, or cannot prove, you have met the above skills and handling requirements, your skills must be assessed before the first day of the course.

MATERIALS REQUIRED

A bicycle in excellent operating condition and a proper fitting helmet
A copy of the Instructors Binder from TCC (available only to registrants)
Pen, paper and a watch
A copy of John Foresters’ ‘EFFECTIVE CYCLING’ (recommended).
Some other material from the National Examiner may also be required.

~$100 for the CAN-BIKE instructor manual
~ $80 to become an 'insured' member of Cycling BC. To lead a certified CANBIKE 2 course in B.C. instructors must be a fully insured member of Cycling BC or the Canadian Cycling Association.
~$25 A copy of John Foresters’ ‘EFFECTIVE CYCLING’ is recommended.
